Why HDPE labels are the future in horticulture
In horticulture, everything revolves around growth, sustainability and innovation. But did you know that even the smallest details, such as labels, which are essential for the growth and logistical process of plants, can have a major impact? The material from which labels are made not only determines the lifespan and quality, but also the effect on the environment. That is why it is time to opt for the future: HDPE (High-Density Polyethylene) instead of PVC (Polyvinyl chloride).
Say 'no' to PVC!
Why? I'll be happy to explain.
PVC? We'd rather leave that behind us
PVC labels may have been standard for a long time, but the drawbacks are piling up. In 2022, the European Union included PVC and the additives contained in it in the Restriction Roadmap, a list of chemicals that are increasingly being regulated. Why? Because PVC contains harmful plasticizers (such as phthalate) that can leak into the environment. Additionally, PVC labels become brittle and porous over time, increasing the risk of breakage. Not ideal for the horticultural industry, where labels need to withstand the elements! Finally, PVC is difficult to recycle due to its high chlorine content and the presence of hazardous additives, which can potentially release toxic chemical emissions.
HDPE: the smart and sustainable choice
Fortunately, there is a better alternative: HDPE. This material is not only stronger, but also more environmentally friendly and future-proof. The advantages at a glance:
- More environmentally friendly – HDPE contains no harmful additives and is 100% recyclable, making it the most sustainable choice.
- No waste – due to the properties of HDPE, the material becomes brittle much less quickly and therefore does not break down in nature, which ensures that no plastic or microplastics end up in nature.
- Stronger and more durable – HDPE labels are more resistant to UV radiation, moisture and chemical influences, making them perfect for use in horticulture.
- Regulation-proof – By choosing HDPE you are prepared for future EU legislation and contribute to a more sustainable sector.
- Quality appearance – HDPE labels retain their color and readability longer, which is essential for a professional appearance.
